Obituary

Rev. Alfred S. Cobb of Mayfield passed away on Monday, October 12, 2026 at his home. He was 89 years old.

Born March 25, 1937, in Coldwater, Kentucky, he was preceded in death by his wife Leona “Lee” (Davenport) Cobb and his parents, Rev. Stephen H. and Pauline E. (Waldrop) Cobb. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Mayfield, Kentucky.

Known as Brother Cobb or Brother Al to most, he loved Jesus, loved the church, and had a passion for pastoral ministry. During his career he pastored six different Baptist churches beginning in White Plains, Kentucky, then in Tennessee and Missouri, and concluding in Mayfield, Kentucky. After retiring from the pastorate, he served as Chaplain with the Graves County jail for many years. He was a graduate of Austin Peay State University and Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Al enjoyed being around people, always ready to share stories and have a good laugh with friends and family. Hobbies included antiquing, travel and watching his favorite sports teams.

Al is survived by his three sons, Stephen Cobb and wife Teri of Murray, Kentucky; Gary Cobb and wife Carla of Athens, Alabama; Dale Cobb and wife Kelly of Madison, Alabama; grandchildren Ryan (Rachel) Cobb, Bradley (Jill) Cobb, Jeremy (Abby) Cobb, Kelly (Greg) Thompson, Garrett Cobb, Logan (Kassidy) Cobb, Braden (Payton) Cobb; and 13 great grandchildren of whom he was incredibly proud.

In his later years, Al was blessed to have the assistance of close neighbors, church friends, and a team of dedicated caregivers who showed him great friendship and compassionate care for which the family is especially grateful.

Funeral services for Alfred Cobb will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 16, 2026 at Byrn Funeral Home in Mayfield, KY. Rev. Kerry Lambert will officiate. Interment will follow at 3:30 pm at Little Wabash Cemetery in Crossville, Illinois.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, October 15, 2026 at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may be made to Samaritan’s Purse, P.O. Box 3000, Boone, NC 28607 or the Cobb Family Scholarship at Murray State University Foundation, Office of Development, 200 Heritage Hall, Murray, KY 42071.
