1921. It was the year Warren G. Harding became President. Flappers geared up to make their daring debut while women nationwide celebrated their newly won right to vote. Blue Moon became one of the most popular songs on the radio and "Will" Rogers rose to national prominence. For the first time, Betty Crocker cake mixes tempted taste buds everywhere and, at last, coast-to-coast telephone calls became reality. It was also then, in the year 1921, that Mayfield native Kirk P. Byrn, Sr. left his position at W.E. Shelton Livery Stables to establish the Byrn Funeral Home. At that time, it's likely he had no idea to what extent his family would take up this noble profession. He was simply satisfying a growing interest in funeral service, sparked by driving a horse-drawn hearse at W.E.Shelton. Soon after purchasing the funeral home, Kirk, Sr. moved the business into the former Stunston residence on W.South Street. It was there that he and his wife, Edith Stephenson Byrn, provided caring service to the families of Mayfield for many years. Edith was a licensed funeral director at a time when it was not a common profession for a woman. Much to the delight of Kirk, Sr., his son, Kirk P. Byrn, Jr., eventually joined his parents at the firm. The funeral home remained at its location on E. South Street until 1960, when Kirk, Jr., then the owner of the firm, built a new facility on Paris Road. Over the years, many things at the funeral home have changed...The fourth generation, Kirk P. Byrn, IV, now owns and operates the firm. Though the facility still remains at its convenient location at 1020 Paris Road, the building has been completely redecorated, with particular emphasis on a warm, home-like atmosphere. Parking has been added to ensure accessibility is easy for everyone. Additional services such as funeral pre-planning, memorial videos, and a 24-hour obituary line are now available. Although there have been many changes, the single-most important thing has remained the same. Byrn's special dedication to Mayfield and Graves County families has been handed down through four generations.
